Donnie Darko has always been a weirdly personal movie for me, because it's set during my senior year in high school and a lot of the music they play was what was big at that place and time. (Also, my highschool girlfriend reminds me, we were at least as crazy as donnie and gretchen if not as doomed.)
Here's an article from Salon that actually explains the movie, at least in the version given in the director's cut. Explanations are obviously spoiler laden.
The movie is extraordinarily touching in parts, someone was crying loudly during the last 5 minutes of the movie.
I went to it because I needed to relax after a day largely spent studying. I feel much happier now, even though Donnie Darko is by no means the feel good movie of the year.
