The day when laptops without hard disks comes closer to practical reality with Samsung's announcement of RTM of their 16Gig NAND Flash Chips. This will soonish (in hardware terms) make the 32Gig 'drives' that ship with some laptops available in 64 and 128Gig versions, and make the price of Solid State Disks in general more reasonable.

This came up both because we talked about it at NYE or NYD, and also I'm tossing my hat into the crazy Apple rumors bin with apple will release an ssd only version of the macbook at Macworld. Note that I don't think this is true, it's just that everyone else is talking about things they predict apple will do and I think this would be an interesting jump-to-next-gen leap.

Been a long, quiet day. I've taken the US' most crazily regulated cold medicine today, and as a result I've been feeling somewhat light-headed all day. I am, however, having a staggeringly productive day in terms of the amount of work that I'm getting done. I even managed to make it out to the east side to get some documents at my bank and state license office.

([livejournal.com profile] cuddlenoise just dropped by.)

The end of the truck v. tree saga is that it would cost more to repair my truck than its current resale value, but the insurance company decided they'd rather repair it than declare it totalled, so they will pay to fix it. (Apparently, they think that the warranty repairs done when the transmission/drive train failed about doubles the value of the truck.) I'm happy about this, especially if they're right about the value of the truck. (The adjuster said my truck was in great mechanical condition and would probably make it until the world runs out of oil. yay, Seattle.) My current inclination is just to sell the truck unrepaired, but I suspect that I have more driving left to do.

Health appears to be good recently. I've been following a glorious new plan from my nutritionist for the last week or so, and it's been pretty good so far. Feel great. I don't know how this relates to the whole crazy meth-precursor cold medicine thing, though, as I recall the last time I took huge amounts of pseudoephedrine HCL I felt pretty happy with life as well. We'll see. In general, I have great faith in this set of nutritionist guidelines as they don't contain anything that's subjectively insane, unlike the sort of recommendations I get a lot when working with that profession.

There's a hilariously angry guy working across the aisle from me today who's really quite over the top in his personal mannerisms. He's constantly jibbering and flailing about with his arms and speaking angrily on his cell phone. He's using a bunch of networked laptops, most of which are 80286 vintage, and has a surge protector that is supposed to go under 80s-vintage computer monitors with him. He's got a rolling cart to haul all this shiat around with him, and apparently has many baloney sandwiches in his pockets that he removes and eats when he thinks the baristas aren't looking.

Funky.

Tomorrow, I'm probably going to go to the Art Walk in Pie Yo Near square. If you're interested in meeting up for that, comment or email.
