eventually something about how fun last night was, but...

Last night when I was leaing dinner, I came upon a guy laying against the pole of a parking meter, and two people trying to figure out if he was okay. When I walked by, they said that they'd just seen a bunch of people beating the hell out of him, and they'd pulled over and the assailants ran off.

After that, they were trying to see if he was more or less okay. He didn't seem to be, certainly. They asked me if I could call in to the police what had happened, and I didn't have my cell, so I went down the street asking people. At this point, I was about 70 feet from the Crocodile.

I went to the Crocodilee, and the bouncer said that they wouldn't call from their phone because they 'didn't want to get involved.' I asked them a second time, and they told me that it 'wasn't their problem' and that I should 'ask someone on the street' to call. The bouncer was pretty hostile about it, actually, and I think said something about not letting me in to use the payphone, but at that point I'd already moved on to asking the only person outside of the club at the time. The woman at the coat check and some other staff member asked what had happened, and they were talking about the guy getting beaten up 70 feet from their door without actually doing anything about it.

So, I ran about two blocks to my car and called it in from my cell phone (which I mostly keep in the car when I'm at social events.) They took my description of the guy who'd been beaten, and said they'd respond. However, it took much longer than it probably had to thanks to the 'helpfulness' of the Crocodile staff.

It always bothers me when people actively avoid helping others. I mean, they could have just called the police and told them there was a guy beaten up on the street, but apparently showing that much compassion for another human being was too problematic for the 'people' who work at the Crocodile.
