Mostly I'm including this (because I'm assuming that anyone who's interested in negativland is keeping their own surveillance on them) because I'm thinking about [livejournal.com profile] alphawussy saying that Negativland is the US's Laibach. I'd be interested in what other people think.

The track below (downloading) is remarkable because it is made up entirely of samples which are just on the edge of recognizable. I highly recommend giving it a whirl.

Now it's No Business, a full length Negativland CD/book project [will] arrive sometime in May all dressed up in a, "fancy shmancy die-cut sleeve package with a 14,000 word essay, a computer playable video, and 37 minutes of audio that are all about, and examples of, Negativland's current take on issues of file-sharing, downloading, appropriation, and the supposed collapse of the music business, circa 2005, say the crew on their website.

Listen to the downloading collage by Negativeland, well worth listening to. Article at here.

I went to see Negativland last week, and I was disappointed. I was glad I went; they're a band I've wanted to see perform for a while; but what they chose to perform that night was a couple hours of evangelical atheism, which I don't really find any more appealing than any other evangelical religion, and they leaned heavily on sinply presenting ideas in the source material unchanged, instead of holding up a twisted mirror to it.

Yeah, apparently their shows vary wildly according to the point they're trying to make at the time. The big pageantry shows are a thing of the past, according to their last set of talks in Seattle.

I saw them way back when they were touring supporting U2 and Guns. It was... Interesting. The toasters that never popped up and started flaming were somewhat stinky.

All in all, performance art and not so much a concert.

As for Libach... I really like the cover of Sympathy for the Devil, but I don't really see the parallel. I'll have to think about it and listen to more.
