Spring Break '06, I guess.

This weekend was interesting, and sort of frenetic. Friday, I approximately finished the quarter and went to a get together at the college inn more or less set up by ouiserprl, zahgurim, and that general part of my cohort. It was a good time, very relaxing. It was good to see people again, especially since I haven't run into those folks much because most of them are in the 'traditional librarian' paths so I don't overlap classes much with them. After that, I went to the Nerve Filter release pre-gathering briefly, before going on to Negativland.

Negativland was incredible, my favorite of the times that I'd seen them before. It was framed overall as a company-based cult of reason decrying religion on a radio show they were producing called 'It's all in your head FM,' but there were many inversions of contexts and other interesting themes throughout the evening, as well as just a lot of great musical technical ability. One of the really interesting parts of their performance was that they were performing with no mp3esque crap, lots of (apparent) analog filters and suchlike. It was also interesting how people with different backgrounds understood negativland as saying completely opposite things depending on how many (and how subtle) layers of inversion they detected.

Was at the show with aurifex and double00range, and proximately with catherinna and djslowdive. I also owe a big debt to SFM for letting me play havok with ticketing systems so etyrniti could go on Saturday.

Late that night, a friend came over and watched the Battlestar Galactica season finale with me. I'm not going to put out any spoilers, but there were a series of interesting moral dilemmas in it. I'm glad that I was talked into watching it.

Saturday, I went to firegirl's birthday party, it was interesting and a lot of fun. I hadn't seen her in ages, and it was good to see those people. I met someone who told me about a trade paper for people who earn a substantial part of their living through participating in clinical trials, more details on that later after she mails me back. I also got to see Ari's kid, yay!

After that, I went to a party for the people in my cohort who are graduating. Since I haven't been around the cohort much this quarter, due to taking no cores, I've been missing the folks that I don't see too often; a lot of my favorite ischoolers who I don't see enough were there. It's going to be weird losing touch with those people, but I suppose the ones that want to stay in touch will. I'm sort of sanguine about that issue currently because I'm in a low-bullshit-tolerance mood of late.

After that, I went to fix a bad problem with a computer, and ended up at the ConWorks closing party, where I saw the innumerable people who'd gone to Saturday night negativland, the play about Rachel Corrie, or were their to see the buttersprites. First off, the buttersprites-- their schtick is much better to hear about than witness. Other than that, it was really great to see so many people at once from so many different social circles.

So that's SPRING BREAK WEEKEND 06.01, I guess. Very busy, but a good time. Had an interesting job interview as well, but more about that in the event i actually get a job. Also, docbrite managed to cheer me up a lot by quoting Why I Hate Saturn in her blog, which completely made my day. Crap, there's a lot of LJ names in this, brane toasty.

negativland is important to me from a musical and intellectual standpoint in a way that transcends the role usually associated with music. Many of the ideas I consider 'important' culturally and musically can found in their work. Also, they just rock musically.

Thank you so much for helping me out. The show was really incredible. I found watching them play without a laptop and with, what looked to me like 8-tracs! I also really enjoyed some of the interesting and different ways they made a point about some things.

I completely forgot about the graduation party this weekend. Doh! I was at home playing video games in the evening, so it's not like I couldn't have made it, either.
