sports rally today at seattle center
Apr. 18th, 2007 11:49 amSo, today there's a rally outside key arena for fans of the NBA Sonics to go and demonstrate how much they want a new stadium. Apparently, the voting measure that would have put a $500million basketball arena in Renton at taxpayer expense.
A lot of this centers around the idea of the Sonics as "Seattle's Team." They're not. They belong to some rich guy who lives somewhere else. Sorry for the confusion. In case you're wondering, the only team that does actually belong to its community is the Green Bay Packers. When the Packers aren't using the football field, it's a town park and people can picnic in it. Imagine that around here. So, basically, I think that claiming this town in any way has possession of the sonics is disingenuous.
I'd almost like to have an antirally with the slogan "two more to go," but honestly, I'd like to see another sports team in seattle, just from a better sport.

Date: 2007-04-19 02:40 pm (UTC)That fucking sucks.
And I have yet to see an economic analysis that shows building a sports arena is good for the city that ponies up the cash for the millionaire owners to keep them from moving the team.
