Today's workout was 1433 calories on the elliptical machines in 84 minutes. I was going to go for an even 90 minutes/1500 calories, but one of the muscles in my back started feeling peaked. Certainly, burning 1433 calories isn't going to be a wise day-to-day choice, but I feel pretty good right now. I suspect that tomorrow may be an ugly day, and I'd only eaten a bowl of teriyaki (non-wheat-soy) today, so I'm about to have some sort of late snack.

Aside from that, my attempts at productivity today went well, I got most of the modelling and a bunch of the functionality done for a complicated project. Now all I have to do is get the UI up to snuff and collect a bunch of data to populate the server with.

This weekend was a lot of fun, Orkestar Zirkonium, Circus Contraption, Pumpkin Peanut Soup, Hive Mind Halloween, and a trip to a crappy restaurant and a box store with great company. My life is good. I think tomorrow is going to be a festival of sore muscles, though, because as I'm sitting here typing I can feel the muscle fibers in my legs giving me advice on what's for breakfast.

Man, that is some serious calorie burn! I've always read that running a mile burns approx. 100 calories. So, a 90 minute run averaging a 10 min. mile would burn approx. 900 calories. How are you burning so many on an elliptical? Does it ask you to input your weight? That might be part of it, since I know it takes more for me to burn 100 calories than someone who is larger.

Just curious. :)

i was wondering that too. 1500 calories is like a 15 mile run. that's a lot for 90 minutes!

I can sustain 17kcal/minute for extended periods of time. This was me pushing that for as long as I could. I think that a lot of it is weight-based, and part of it is that my legs are strong enough that I can do 120-140 paces/minute at high resistances. I'm pretty much a ball of solid muscle below the waist.

at my best/healthy weight (higher than my 'ideal' weight, but recommended by doctors in the past), the same work would have been 955 kcal.

yeah, it's weight based on the elliptical, which gives me an advantage in burning weight.

Damn. I bust some serious ass during my spinning classes, and those generally only burn ~500-530 calories.

spinning burns less calories than things where you actually support your body weight while you're zooming along. the amount of force is different. you're probably doing more useful muscle activity for your purposes doing it, though. I'm just going for straight up burn/activity to ramp my cardiovascular system up until I can sustain 20kcal/min burn. then i'm going to be doing a lot of the physical training type 'science' stuff.
