Someone started one of those interminable burning man advice threads. This was my intro to it on bcwa.

Another thing that's important to remember for BM: If you don't carry your wallet with you on playa, keep it somewhere were it can be found.

Looting people's shit to find their health insurance and id cards gets old really fucking fast, and I've helped way too many people's camps do that over the last 10 years. Also, car keys so someone can drive your car down to reno to pick you up or back home if needed.

Finding people's camps based on some vague description so you can tell people to go loot through someone's shit is also really lame, so camp somewhere that's got a fucking sign on it. Or, at least, have your camp location written down somewhere on your person.

Somewhere, maybe next to your health insurance card, have emergency contact information written down. Ideally, that should contain some on-playa and off-playa contact information for other people.

Let no one's claims about burning man not being as dangerous as it used to be dissuade you from thinking that black rock city is a dangerous place.

Do you know how many wallets we found in the ballpit over the years? and checkbooks? I think it's ridiculous to carry that shit around. Carry a photocopy if you need to, leave the real thing in the car/tent. it's better to have to send someone back to camp to get it than to not know where in the hell it is.

Good point. I chain my keys and wallet to myself, so I've never had the problem of losing them, but I can see how some folks'd need to take more precautions.
