anyone have a sense for how bad the financial issues are at reed college? the times article was a little light on that, as its focus was on the students.

Well, they do go into the details of the endowment reduction, the % payout per year, and the budget breakdown. Not sure what else you'd want. The school isn't in any danger of closing or anything, just some belt tightening.

I'm surprised they're not admitting students who they can't give aid to. That's inline with their goal of aid for anyone who needs it, but still seems strange to not even admit them. Back in the old days, maybe the '70s, there was a class of students called "come anyways" who were admitted, not offered any aid, and allowed to attend if they could figure out financing. Also, it's common to get a better aid package once you've successfully completed a year.

I'm used to getting some other information from a school when discussing the health of the endowment / institution financially... someone pointed out to me where reed puts that on another blog i keep.

Yeah, uchicago has the 'successfully completed a year gets better package second year' thing to, they used to jokingly call it 'buy in.' I worked for the admissions office for food (seriously) while I was in college.
