I feel exploited by the movie rent, possibly moreso even than the theatrical version. I don't know, I think it's because I spent a lot of my early adulthood (22-26) living in the East Village and I came to identify with it (a version of it that no longer exists) strongly.

Am I silly for feeling exploited by Rent?

feh.

I didn't know that. That means you were living in Manhattan when I had the apartment in Times Square... and was working down at the Trade Center...

yes, it's another example of our freaky parallel lives thing. The ex-girlfriend[1] was also living in times squarish and working down near the WTC during this time.

[1] because i've gone out with many women, but there will only be ever one that shall be specifically known as the ex-girlfriend.

Why do you feel exploited?

Largely, because the movie claims to be the end all and be all of the east village experience in the times i lived there, and it deals wackily and crappily with themes and things that are very important to me and played a large part in my becoming an adult.

For some reason, commercialization of things similar to my particular life experiences rankle me, and Rent -- through it's claims to represent a particular place and era -- turns something that I participated in into a spectacle. I guess that's a particularly bmesque take on it, but I think that's as close as I can really come to explaining it.
