I went to the Artwalk in Pioneer Square last night with [livejournal.com profile] fascistfashion, [livejournal.com profile] mercuryslavejq, [livejournal.com profile] brothersterno, and [livejournal.com profile] empyrean_art last night. It was a lot of fun going to the artwalk with people who actually had fun opinions about art and were overall amusing. Lots of trouble and entertainment ensued, eventually we got yelled at by a fireman.

The general theory of the artwalk is that artists put up shows in various galleries and people buy the art. However, the art doesn't really change much over time and some of it is astonishing crap. In order to deal with this crap art problem, we fortified ourselves with wine, as obtained in a subterranean hole called 'Luigi's Grotto.' There were no vicious turtles, but there were some mushrooms. It had goodish food and baddish wine, and some extremely lively wait staff. Probably a mandatory visit from now on on the artwalk.

After that, it was a lot of wandering around and seeing random things. good companions make for good times.

next time, we get chihuly's other eye. on a stick.

I have enjoyed artwalks but also noticed the same phenomenon. Fundamentally they are about shopping. Big Midwestern City A where I used to live had an artwalk that was almost undisguisedly about buying things only peripherally related to art. It was always very funny to watch, because the suburbians would come "dressed up" for the city and the "art walk."

i was pretty amused by the fact that the best art was in coffee shops. it's so very telling.

Well, the wife/fiancee of one of the partners in that coffeeshop has been the curator of both the henry and the microsoft art collection, so they have more connections than most of the galleries on artwalk do.

Maybe next month some of the ones that were weirdly closed will be open. I like the stuff at Howard House and Platform on a pretty regular basis, though.

I hope it's better next time.
