This strip raises an idea that actually redeems the Garfield comic, because it turns out to be a grim exercise in existentialism. You have to read it to believe it, but you may wish to cheer yourself the hell up after.

I remember seeing the one where he reaches for the bowl and it vanishes in the paper. Even then, at not quite 17 years old, i recall thinking that it seemed a terribly coarse attempt at pathos. It's amazing how quickly Davis returned to his regularly scheduled inanity.
