so, had a lot of fun this weekend, with the exception of the retarded truck incident yesterday. i had a bit too much to drink at kold war last night, and am curently working away on things with a raging hangover.

This was one of the most fun weekends I've had in a long time, but I've got roughly a 10-meter long todo-list at the moment. of course, true to form, i managed not to bring my phone to online coffee today, so some of the things i was planning to get done aren't going to.

It was a busy weekend.

Today, I kicked off my attempts to learn Chinese with repeating, "Excuse Me, Do you speak english" roughly 1000 times on the first pimsleur lesson that i got from the liberry. In terms of repetitions, it's easier to make a memorial to peace than to learn a foreign language and I'm beginning to think that I should stick to folding cranes. brane.

I really like the Pimsleur course on Cantonese. Put about 20 of the lessons on my iPod, but I've barely made it past the "I'm not Chinese, I'm American" lesson (which, as some have pointed out to me, would probably be obvious if I were to visit China...).

Yeah, it's actually hard to figure out which of cantonese, mandarin, and taiwanese will be most useful. I'm worried that I'm going to hit some sort of sticking point down the road where I should have learned cantonese, honestly. I figure the different character simplification methods will turn out to be less of a problem, although I'm probably going to have explodee-head a lot as I try to learn.

Ni hao. Wo hui shuo putonghua keshir wo shuo de bu hao... you're better off learning Mandarin. Cantonese is only really spoken in Hong Kong and in Taiwan you can often get by with Mandarin. At least, that's what my Chinese prof says... she could be biased.

I'm having a hard enough time even listening to the Swedish CDs I got for the car! I will never be able to learn an oriental language. The nordic languages will kill me first, mainly because I am very sure that the only way for a native English speaker to make some of the vowel sounds is to have someone punch them in the stomach half-way through the word.

you should take IPA for a bit, as it will help you to learn the mechanical movements needed to make the various sounds.
