Children of Bodom is a finnish ???metal1 band that may be using a heavy metal ß. wacky.

1???metal: almost all metal sucks so much that fans argue about fine subdistinctions in genre so as to avoid having to listen to the music,

So it's like electronic music, except with guttural screaming.

more badly played guitars, less badly programmed synths.

what is a heavy metal beta? At least, that's how my firefox rendered that character.

and a lot of metal does suck; but plenty of it is really really good.

it's an eszett -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9F

i'm postulating something like a heavy metal umlaut, but with the ß being randomly replaced by a B when written.

Heavy metal (and probably most of its subdistinctions) is HUGE in Scandinavia. I was quite shocked when going cd/record hunting over in Stockholm just how much heavy metal there is still out and about... kind of crazy or scary (or both ;-)

I invented the Children of Bodom live in concert drinking game. Every time the lead singer/guitarist flips his hair, you take a drink. You're Captain of the Carpet Ship by the beginning of the second song.

We used to do that whenever Nancy Wilson from Heart would kick her leg on an emphatic downbeat.

Yup, same principle. Like when Metallica uses "Hey!" as a key lyric.

My LJ friend Creatrix777 turned me on to C.O.B. I'm not a fan of "metal" per se, but I thought they were pretty good.

Dude, have you caught Metalocalypse? As someone who spent most of the eighties in a leather jacket trying toi cripple myself from the neck up, this is the funniest shit EVER! Lots of in-jokes for people who know headbanger-trivia. ;-)
