I am predicting (according to the "republican ex-boyfriend theory") that Carly Fiorina will be named to replace Palin due to the 'extraordinary nature of the financial crisis' needing a seasoned hand.

...a CEO who got a 42 million golden parachute after getting fired for destroying Hewelett-Packard?

Would you like to guess how awful the McCain campaign would look for making that choice?

I'd love to see them do that, but it's because I want Obama to win every state.

well, the republicans currently have a guy who was involved in the worst financial ethics scandal in the senate running for president and people just don't bring it up, so i don't think that will stop them.

They will bring up the Keating Five, though. I'm guessing Obama beats McCain about the head with that throughout the 3rd debate. I think the only reason it's not being brought up already is that strategists advise saving strong messages for mid-October, when voters choices become more final.

I've pondered that myself, but I figure it's extremely unlikely. Bush the first also deeply regretted the choice of Quayle (and for similar reasons) but didn't drop him, even in his second run. To do so would be to invite scathing criticism for mismanaging such a crucial decision.

Is it worse to let Palin remain on the ticket? Tough to say. My guess is that she'll maintain a better grip during the debates. If she performs in the debates as badly as she did in the interviews (and assuming that Biden isn't seen as bullying her) then yeah, maybe they'll have to stare into that abyss. But it's going to take some spectacular, irreversible failure to take a leap that will inevitably result in questions that start with, "Senator McCain, if you are commander in chief…"

Yeah, I think that could be a good way to couch it. On the other hand if I'm the opposition I say, "Hang on – you chose your previous running mate and didn't think she passed ***HISTORIC*** muster? Or maybe you just didn't think that was important? Sounds like you don't take the job seriously, Senator."

But, to your point, facing that music may be less painful than depths the campaign could be dragged to by a a full-force Palin implosion.

Wow. Just, wow.

I think it's going to be really tough for Biden to prevail. First of all, he has his own prediliction for gaffes to fight. He will have to come across as intelligent, have a firm grasp on issues, be able to play the sympathetic father card, and not sound sexist (with a hair-trigger definition of sexism), overbearing, condescending, what-have-you. A tall order and virtually hard to meet. I also have a huge suspicion Palin cries very prettily. Meaning, she can play damsel in distress, and while her opponent is disadvantaged, hit him hard in the solar plexus.
